From year to year I become more and more attached to wild asters. they are so varied in color, habit and form. The one I look at last, I like best of all. Eloise Butler

Panicled Aster
Stiff Goldenrod
Panicled Aster (Symphyotrichum lanceolatum (Willd.) [Aster simplex]). Family: Aster. White to slightly violet tinged flowers, no more than one inch wide, these nice specimens grow among the sunflowers in the Upland Garden..

Nodding Onion
Bur Marigold (Bidens cernua L.). Family: Composite. AKA "Beggars' Ticks". You will spot these bright deep yellow blooms on the bog trail in the Woodland Garden. A nice autumn contrast to the spring blooming Marsh Marigold from the Buttercup Family.     Nodding Wild Onion (Allium cernuum Roth.) Family: Lily. A plant widely distributed across the United States. Upland Garden in several places. 2nd image under.
Smooth Aster
Smooth Blue Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve (L.) A. Löve & D. Löve) [Aster laevis]) Family: Aster. An aster of the Upland Garden with light violet colored rays and smooth to the touch leaves. Close-up on roll-over.
Canada Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis L.) Family: Aster). A plant anyone in Minnesota will usually recognize - a harbinger of fall. Upland Garden. Close-up image under.

American Highbush Cranberry Fruit
American Cranberrybush (Viburnum opulus L. var. americanum Aiton.) Family: Viburnum. Easily recognized in the fall by the clusters of bright red berries, this tall shrub is found back by the Mallard Pool in the Woodland Garden. The berries can be used for jellies and will remain through the winter if not all eaten by the birds in the fall.
Calico Aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum L.) [Aster lateriflorus]). (a.k.a. Side Flowering Aster) Family: Aster. Found in the Woodland Garden this aster has very small flower heads with white to slight purple tinged rays, lance shape leaves. Close-up on roll-over.

New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae L.) [Aster novae-angliae]) in a stand of grasses at the far end of the Upland Garden.
Pale Gentian
Plain Gentian (Gentiana alba Muhl. ex Nutt.) Family: Gentian. Upland Garden in a number of places. Similar in appearance to the blue Bottle Gentian, the flowers can have a greenish tinge to the white. Uncommon in Minnesota except the SE. 2nd image under.

Prairie Sage
Prairie (white) Sage, also Western Mugwort. (Artemisia ludoviciana Nutt.) Family: Composite. Leaves and stem covered with white hair, hence the name. Plant of open dry areas, native to south and western Minnesota. Close up image under
Bottle Gentian. (Gentiana clausa Raff.) Family: Gentian. Upland Garden in both sunny and shady areas - color varies. Occurs throughout most of Minnesota along with several other similar species. Close up image under

New England Blazing Star (Northern Blazing Star) (Liatris scariosa (L.) Willd. var. novae-angliae Lunell) Family: Aster.Upland Garden. Distinguishable by the flower heads being button shaped and not more than 1 1/2 times as long as wide, with a noticeable stalk. Close-up image under
Dense (Spiked) Blazing Star (Liatris spicata (L.) Willd. var. spicata). Family: Aster Upland Garden. Flower heads cylindrical and twice as long as wide, very thin leaves. Close up image under

Red Turtlehead
White Rattlesnake Root (Prenanthes alba L.). Family: Composite. Upland Garden. Flowers can range from white to greenish and yellowish. Native to most of Minnesota except the SW.
Red Turtlehead (Chelone obliqua L.). Family: Figwort. The main and very impressive grouping is found in the Woodland Garden at Station 24. There are other small groups around the Garden. These plants came from a Mr. Rohl's garden in Minneapolis, 1931, to replace a stolen previous clump. Blooms mid to late August. Close-up image under..
           
Arrow Leaved Aster
White Arrowleaf Aster (Symphyotrichum urophyllum (Lindl.) G.L. Nesom) (Aster sagittifolius)). Family: Aster. Upland Garden. Small flower heads, leaves with shallow teeth and a wing at the stem on the middle leaves. Close-up image under.
Zig-zag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis L.). Family: Aster. This plant from the Woodland Garden. Flowers in the leaf axils. Leaves tend to be more oval at lower parts of the stem, which develops a characteristic zig-zag. Found widely in Minnesota except the original dry prairie areas. Close-up image under.

New England Aster       Red vine
New England Aster(Symphyotrichum novae-angliae L.) [Aster novae-angliae]) One of the most prolific of the asters in the Upland Garden. The plants are tall with the leaves distinctively clasping the stem. At the east end of the Upland Garden a large group of these asters are more rose colored instead of the more common purple coloration. Second image under.
