In spring the Woodland Garden bursts into its finest display while only the earliest bloomers show in the Upland Garden.    Wood Poppy  
 
Bloodroot - double flower (Sanguinaria canadensis). Family: Poppy. These bloodroots with double flowers occur on the Woodland Garden path from the front gate to the Martha Crone Shelter. Martha Crone was quite fond of these as she sent examples to several friends in Minnesota and Iowa.
  
Wood Poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum) Also called Celandine Poppy. Family: Poppy. Found near guidebook station #4 in the Woodland Garden, it is a solitary specimen.

Yellow Lady's-slipper ( Cypripedium calceolus var. pubescens). Family: Orchis.
The largest clump is found at Guidebook station 8 in the Woodland Garden; it blooms as early as mid May. Specimens were acquired by Eloise Butler from Mahtomedi, MN, the Glenwood Park Bog, Minneapolis and from the Savage, MN meadow. Photo above by Melissa Hansen. Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum). Family: Geraniaeae. You will find large swaths of these in the Woodland Garden. Color can vary by micro-location. Native to the wooded parts of Minnesota.
  

American Highbush Cranberry (Viburnum trilobum). Found near the Mallard Pool at the north end of the Woodland Garden. Viburnum Family. These shrubs are quite old, and produce large quantities of red berries in the fall.

Swamp buttercup (Ranunculus septentrionalis). Family: Ranunculaceae. In the Woodland Garden.
  
Wild Calla (Calla palustris). Family: Araceae (Arum). In the bog of the Woodland Garden.
  
         
 
Wild Oats (Sissile leaved Bellwort) (Uvularia sessilifolia). In the Woodland Garden. Lily Family. A relative of the larger Large-flowered Bellwort.

Running Myrtle (Vinca minor). Family: Dogbane. Hillside patches in the Woodland Garden. Also called Periwinkle.
  
Veiny Pea (Lathyrus venosus). Family: Leguminosae (Pea or Bean). One of the few early June bloomers in the Upland Garden. Also called Veiny Vetchling.
